Common Grounds Spark School

PROJECT BRIEF

Located in the heart of Maboneng Precinct, Common Grounds is a striking example of urban renewal and sustainable design, transforming a former dump yard into a vibrant public park. This thoughtfully designed green space enhances the city’s landscape by integrating adaptive reuse and eco-conscious architecture, fostering a sense of community and environmental responsibility. Honouring the area’s industrial heritage, the park’s design repurposes locally sourced materials to reduce waste and celebrate history. A standout feature is the playground equipment, innovatively crafted from decommissioned mining pipes, once integral to the region’s mining industry, now transformed into interactive structures that encourage outdoor play and exploration. Surrounded by innovative two-way market stalls, the park seamlessly connects with the urban fabric, offering a dynamic blend of public space activation and enhanced safety. These dual-facing stalls allow for continuous engagement between pedestrians, local vendors, and park visitors, strengthening the neighborhood’s social and economic vibrancy. More than just a community park, Common Grounds stands as a symbol of sustainable urban transformation, where history, environmental responsibility, and placemaking converge to create a modern, inclusive, and engaging outdoor space in one of Johannesburg’s most dynamic districts.
